How can I use Fusion like a Pro?

4 Tips to help you use Fusion like a pro!

When it comes to furniture paints on the market these days, Fusion Mineral Paint is certainly one of the most user-friendly products available. Fusion requires very little prep work and has outstanding durability without the need of an additional top coat. We offer all sorts of complementary products that allow you to achieve a variety of looks and finishes.

So, on the topic of Fusion being so easy, we thought we’d put together this blog post telling you about some quick and simple tips that will make your Fusion experience even better!

1) Prep…a little goes a long way!

Your surface plays a direct role to the finish of your project. The paint is only as stable as your substrate (the current surface you wish to paint). If your project is glossy, previously coated with a lacquer, or potentially has a wax finish on it, you simply must prep your piece for guaranteed results, there is just no cutting corners for a flawless perfect finish!

Lightly sand and degloss the surface

By sanding you are essentially breaking open the surface. This will allow for lots of microscopic holes for the 100% acrylic Fusion Mineral Paint to bind/ grip on to. This doesn’t mean that it will take you all day of sanding, no just a simple 220 grit and a gentle rub along the surface to de-gloss.

Use shellac to seal knots when you’re working with a wooden surface

We cannot stress this enough. No matter how many coats you paint (and this goes with all paint), knots in the wood will poke through unless you first seal them with a shellac.

Laminate

There are tons of different laminate surfaces out there with tons of different chemical compositions. The main goal of a laminate surface is to repel substances from sticking- this includes other paints. Fusion is a water-based acrylic, and may have a hard time adhering to some laminates. The best thing to do is test a small area to see whether or not the surface will accept new paint. Fusion testers are sold for around $4…a great and cheap way to test that your project will work in the long run.

2) When in doubt, test it out

There’s nothing worse than spending time and money on a project and realizing at the end that the paint wasn’t compatible with the surface or that you’re not satisfied with your initial colour choice. Have no fear! Fusion testers are available for approximately $4 a piece. They are an inexpensive way to help you make that  tough decision on which colour to use. In fact, some smaller projects may only need a tester or two of paint to complete!

3) Choosing your tools

Using high quality tools is important for getting a seamless finish. Fusion provides you with the highest quality brushes to get the job done. Hand-made in Italy with natural bristles, our round Fusion brushes are offered in three sizes (1.5″, 2″, and 2.5″) to suit your needs. Why use a round brush? This shape is what the old masters used throughout history. In fact, flat brushes are a rather modern invention. The round brush will be able to hold onto a lot more paint, saving you from needing to reload your brush too often.

Tips:

Dip your brush in water (squeeze out any excess). This will make the brush more malleable and prevent any possible stroke marks from appearing.

Keep in mind that brush strokes appear due to having too much or too little paint on your brush at a time. It takes practice to learn what’s enough, but using the proper tools will get you painting like a pro in no time!

In order to protect your high quality brushes, Fusion offers Brush Soap. It is an all-natural product made from linseed oil. It smells fantastic and will both clean and condition your brush to ensure that they can be used time and time again. Hint….it feels great to use the Brush Soap on your hands too!

4) Keeping your lid clean

Fusion comes in clear containers that allow you to see the colour of the paint. The plastic that we use is both recycled and protective for your paint. Some people do have some problems keeping the containers clean though and once they get covered with paint, the lid becomes a little difficult to get off. We have a couple solutions for you!

Screwdriver!

Simply jimmy a flat head screwdriver in between the lid and container. Twist as you go around the entire circumference of the container. It’ll pop right off!

Plastic Wrap!

This is so simple and effective. Put a piece of plastic wrap over the top of the container before putting on the lid. It will come off very easily!

Clean Paint From Rim and Lid Before Closing Container!

I have also found that if I just rinse lid under running water to remove paint. Then I use a wet paper towel or  Clorox Wipe to remove excess paint from container rim. Reopening container is no problem.

What’s the shelf life of Fusion™ Mineral Paint?

Our packaging is made out of the highest grade PET, which means that the paint inside will not dry out or go bad. The screw top lids offer a highly secure closure, and do not allow for air pockets to enter. Some of our products come in squeeze bottles for easy application and the products inside the containers stay uncontaminated. The shelf life is up to 7 years when the lid is closed properly, the paint will remain in perfect condition, will not separate or go crusty and hard. This is due to a combination of very high quality ingredients, and excellent packaging perfect for keeping paints and finishes in excellent condition.

Our PET containers are hand made in North America, and contain 30% recycled material.
*Fun Fact- Did you know that all containers are hand filled and hand labelled? We employ people not machines!

When do I use Fusion™ Tough Coat™?

Fusion™ Tough Coat™ was developed for those high traffic surfaces such as table tops, seating, and kitchen cabinets. Tough Coat is non-yellowing and provides extra durability against general wear and tear, water damage and food stains.

Do I have to finish my piece with wax?

No, you don’t have to finish your piece, because Fusion™ was formulated with a built in top coat. Once Fusion™ has cured, it yields a highly durable and a washable finish, with no need for a top coat. If you choose, you can of course achieve a beautiful lustre by adding a wax on top. We have a whole array of beautiful decorative and faux finishing products to choose from, to give your piece that little extra.

Can I distress or get a layered look?

Yes you can get a distressed or layered look!

Because of Fusion™’s supreme adhesion, distressing can be tough once the paint is cured. If you would like to do some distressing, we recommend doing it soon after the paint dries or by using our wax block resist.

Press the wax block along the edges where you would like to see the distressed effect between layers of paint. Anything that is applied on top of the waxed areas will resist the paint. You will notice this resist once you are giving your piece a light sanding at the end of your application of all layers of paint. So many times when distressing it is easy to sand right through all the layers- this prevents this from happening! The paint underneath the wax will remain in place, and any paint applied on top of the wax will come off effortlessly, allowing for the perfect distressed look.

How much paint do I need for my projects?

Fusion™ has an excellent coverage, which allows us to offer Fusion™ in Pints and tester sizes. A Pint covers approximately 75 sq ft (7m²).

Most projects only require a Pint, however having to buy a Quart leaves you with wasted paint and money. We are offering excellent quality and coverage, in sizes you will use, resulting in less environmental waste.

How to Prep?

We’re not saying take out your power sander and book half the day off to sand your entire piece down, no, simply take a 220 grit, and give your piece a gentle rub and de-gloss your surface.

How should I prep my piece?

No Prep? No problem—not always true!

A paint will only perform as well as the surface that it’s going on allows. No matter what product you use, if you apply your paint to an unstable surface, the paint will flake, peel, and eventually fail on you. Many surfaces have been previously finished with lacquers or high gloss preparations that were chemically constructed to resist anything adhering to it. So, a little prep goes a long way. If your surface is glossy, take 5 minutes and lightly sand it down to remove some of that gloss, allow the paint some tooth to really soak in and bind with the surface. Our Ultra Grip makes it possible to paint over laminate, Ikea cabinets, you name it! You can now use our Fusion™ line on virtually any surface with excellent results!

What can I use Fusion™ on?

The question is what can’t you use Fusion Mineral Paint on? The options are endless, keep in mind the surface prep that may be necessary depending on the condition of your particular project.

How long does it take to dry?

Drying and curing are two different things. Dry time usually refers to the touch or tackiness. Fusion™ should dry to the touch within an hour or two. High heat temperatures and high humidity play a factor making it sometimes slightly longer to dry.

Cure time is approximately 21 days, once again depending on the weather, similar to all water based paints on the market. What does this mean? You can still use your piece gently, however the paint will be at it’s strongest to resist any marks the longer it has to cure. Once the Fusion™ line has cured, the durability is unrivaled. Our Fusion™ line is water resistant.

What is 100% acrylic paint?

Our Fusion™ is made up of 100% Acrylic resin and nothing less! This results in one consistent and cohesive surface across your piece. So what exactly does that mean? With Fusion™ you will have a perfectly sound surface that is not porous, meaning that you do not have to apply a top coat unless you want a special effect. Other paints on the market such as latex, or anything less than 100% acrylic are using low quality and highly toxic vinyl and latex as they are inexpensive filers. Our products are made up of only the highest quality materials resulting in a zero VOC highly quality paint. Not only are they low VOC, they are also free from many other chemicals currently in other lines of paints such as ammonia and formaldehyde. Fusion™ contains none of these.

Is Fusion™ the same as a Chalk-like Paint?

No, it’s not. Fusion™ is a 100% acrylic, water-based paint. The “mineral” in Fusion Mineral Paint™ refers to the pigments used which are harvested from the earth. Using natural rather than synthetic pigments allows for greater depth in colour and better durability to UV light and time. Once cured, a surface painted with Fusion™ is both water and stain proof. No primer or top coat required, making it more of a one-step kind of paint. Blogger Melanie of Lost & Found gives us an excellent breakdown about the differences between Fusion Mineral Paint™ and chalk-like paints here.
